The 23-Year Preparation that Led To Salem’s First Steakhouse & Wine Bar
When 43 Church unveiled its "without the beefy attitude" steakhouse concept and new name in September, 2011, it was a restaurant that was 23 years in the making.
Owners George and Mary Harrington took the full reins of the restaurant after the retirement of his father, the senior George Harrington who successfully owned and operated the Lyceum restaurant since 1988.
Located in Lyceum Hall in the historic downtown district, 43 Church graces the cobblestone streets of Salem in a building with a lot of history. The Lyceum Hall served as Salem’s community lecture hall, where ideas and debates on politics, society, technology and science flourished. It is perhaps fitting, then, that the idea behind 43 Church is to serve people who love a fine steakhouse but are turned off by the brassy steakhouse attitude – a restaurant that serves truly great food and lets it speak for itself.
And the elder George Harrington? He is still a regular fixture. (He’s the one at the bar having the mushroom flatbread with a porterhouse steak.)
